Hexham (Elvaston) Bowling Club
Hexham Elvaston Bowling Club
Welcome!
Welcome to the website of
Hexham Elvaston Bowling Club
in Northumberland.
The season has finished and the green is closed until next year.
It seems like a long time ago but the season ended on a baking hot day with a very close and enjoyable match between the President's and Ladies' Captain mixed teams over 16 ends. A generous pooled tea was shared followed by the presentation of trophies won during the season. it was delightful to hear that over £820 has been raised for the 2023 President's charity, MacMillan Cancer Support.
It has been very encouraging to see our newest members with no previous bowling experience attend jumbles on Saturdays and do really well, putting into practice the new techniques they have been learning. Some have also dipped their toes into Monday Shield matches - longer single team games so somewhat different from jumbles - and do really well. New bowlers are often their own harshest critics but there are many reasons for them to feel pleased with what they have achieved this year. So, well done all of you.
The usual pose of a Skip

The lot of a Skip is often stressful and frustrating as they wonder what they will have to deal with once their team have finishing their offering. This pose is often seen. Of course, skips sometimes undo the good work of their team members!

Contact Suzanne for more information on Suzanne.phillips@rocketmail.com
The indoor carpet bowls season is well underway at the clubhouse on Saturday afternoons.
You don't have to be a member of the club to play each week and bowlers of all abilities are welcome to join in for fun and friendship until Spring next year. Just turn up at 2.00pm. All welcome. £15 membership, £3 per session.
Vacancy: Social Events Organiser
Jean Allen has decided to retire as our social events organiser after some twenty years of loyal service. Jean has always been very encouraging by inviting and involving members to participate in club activities, both on and off the green. But its time to call it a day.
A number of people are taking forward social events, but a coordinator to make a brief report to the club committee at their infrequent meetings would be much appreciated. Could this person be you? Please let Mark, our club secretary, know of your interest.

Play the Game
Direction of Play
New members may be unaware of the need to work out the Direction of Play. To even out the wear on the playing surface we change the direction of play each week. It will either be Hut to Hut (clubhouse at your back) or Hedge to Hedge (hedge at your back). The direction of play is displayed on the notice board in the clubhouse foyer.

December 12th: Christmas lunch at Hexham Abbey at 12.30pm. Two or three course options. Please let Shelagh Carter know numbers in your party and menu choices by the end of October.
Nothing to excite you here? Then why not suggest an event you would like to have and, even better, take the lead in organising it. You will get support that is for sure.
Non-member guests warmly welcomed, donations for raffle prizes gratefully received on the night. Social events are a great opportunity to have a bit of fun and to raise funds for the club.
Non-members and visitors to our lovely town and county are normally warmly welcomed to play. Please contact the club Secretary in the first instance.
