Welcome to the website of

Hexham (Elvaston) Bowling Club

in Northumberland.

The season is now well underway and the green is open so do come along and have a roll-up.

If you haven't played bowls before then have a scroll down this page where we hope you will discover some of the many advantages of taking up bowls. In addition we've listed some benefits of joining Elvaston.

Age is no barrier to this sport. People of all ages can compete and partake successfully with one another and the youngest and eldest bowlers can play in the same game and have a very close match. If you are looking to take up a good, social and enjoyable sport with minimal costs for equipment then bowls will be for you, as well as being very good for you. Do get in touch with us for more details or if you have any questions not answered here on the website. We look forward to hearing from you and meeting up.

It has been very encouraging to see men and women with no previous experience of bowling attend our training sessions on Saturdays and do really well. Some have already dipped their toes into Saturday afternoon jumbles. Peter, a brand new bowler, won the first jumbles he entered walking off with his prize, a big bag of sweets!

New bowlers are often their own harshest critics but there are many reasons for them to feel pleased with how they have done so far. So, well done all of you.

The Green is open

If you are new to bowling and have got this far on the website; well done!

Here are some reasons why playing bowls at Elvaston is a good decision:

  • pleasant, quiet location

  • easy, on-street free parking

  • half-price membership fees to new bowlers in their first season

  • free bowling tuition from Bowls England qualified club coaches

  • free use of club facilities when no matches are being played

  • friendly welcome from members who enjoy bowls

  • be involved as much as you wish, including league matches and friendlies

  • Saturday afternoon jumbles - great for beginners

  • occasional social events

  • all whilst having fun.

We rely on members being involved with their club. If you would like to offer your gifts and talents too that is a real bonus and great all round. It's a real team effort on and off the green.

Play the Game

Open Triples Competition on

Saturday August 17th at 10.00am

We look forward to a warm, sunny day for our popular annual Open Competition. Please click on the pdf for the entry form, details of where it should be sent are contained within it. We look forward to

welcoming you to the club.

Direction of Play

New members may be unaware of the need to work out the Direction of Play. To even out the wear on the playing surface we change the direction of play each week and Mike realigns the settings of the rinks on a planned basis. It will either be Hut to Hut (clubhouse at your back) or Hedge to Hedge (hedge at your back). The direction of play is displayed on the notice board in the clubhouse foyer. We are playing hedge to hedge week commencing June 10th. If you are just coming for a roll-up or some practice please use rinks one and two, thank you. As a reminder the green is normally mown on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and is usually finished by 11.00. Occasionally work will take place outside these times.
