Welcome!

Welcome to the website of

Hexham Elvaston Bowling Club

in Northumberland.

The club committee has had its first meeting of the year and it clearly had the new bowling season in mind as it planned events and activities.

As these are firmed up keep your eye on the website for details.

Existing members will have received an email from the club secretary inviting them to renew their membership for 2024. All of us will be looking forward to getting out bowling and enjoying the fresh air and surroundings at Elvaston once again. If you haven't played bowls before then do have a look at the picture here that highlights some of the many advantages of taking up bowls. In addition we've listed some benefits of joining Elvaston.

Age is no barrier to this sport. People of all ages can compete and partake successfully with one another and the youngest and eldest bowlers can play in the same game and have a very close match. If you are looking to take up a good, social and enjoyable sport with minimal costs for equipment then bowls will be for you, as well as being very good for you. Do get in touch with us for more details or if you have any questions not answered here on the website. We look forward to hearing from you and meeting up.

It has been very encouraging to see last year's new members with no previous bowling experience attend jumbles on Saturdays and do really well, putting into practice the new techniques they have been learning. Some have also dipped their toes into Monday Shield matches - longer single team games so somewhat different from jumbles - and do really well. New bowlers are often their own harshest critics but there are many reasons for them to feel pleased with what they have achieved this year. So, well done all of you.

The usual pose of a Skip

The lot of a Skip is often stressful and frustrating as they wonder what they will have to deal with once their team have finishing their offering. This pose is often seen. Of course, skips sometimes undo the good work of their team members!

If you are new to bowling and have got this far on the website; well done!

Here are some reasons why playing bowls at Elvaston is a good decision:

  • pleasant, quiet location

  • easy, on-street free parking

  • half-price membership fees to new bowlers in their first season

  • free bowling tuition from Bowls England qualified club coaches

  • free use of club facilities when no matches are being played

  • friendly welcome from members who enjoy bowls

  • be involved as much as you wish, including league matches and friendlies

  • Saturday afternoon jumbles - great for beginners

  • occasional social events

  • all whilst having fun.

We don't have any paid staff except for Aillee who helps keep our green looking great so we rely on members being involved with their club. So if you would like to offer your gifts and talents too that is a real bonus and great all round. It's a real team effort on and off the green.

Spring Cleaning in the Club Grounds

Thanks go to the twelve or so members who came to the club on our first of three Spring Cleaning days. A big improvement was made to the hedge on the north side of the green, giving the borders a good weed as well as clearing three brown bins full of leaves and cuttings. Scroll down for a few photos from the day.

There are two further opportunities to help make a clean sweep of the grounds and paths and tackle inside cleaning and tidying of the clubhouse on:

Tuesday 19th March and Friday 22nd March

What you need to bring with you:

  • appropriate clothing

  • gloves

  • sense of humour

  • some energy

  • something to drink e.g. water

We will provide:

  • tools and equipment, like brushes etc

  • encouragement

  • a warm welcome

  • banter

We shall be meeting from 10.00am. Stay for as long as you are willing and able to do, and you can come and go at any point between 10 and 4.00pm. We look forward to seeing you.

The President, Pat Sheedy, has chosen

Macmillan Cancer Support as his charity for 2024 and hopes we shall be as generous to this charity as we were in 2023.

Indoor carpet bowls takes place at the clubhouse on Saturday afternoons.

You don't have to be a member of the club to play each week and bowlers of all abilities are welcome to join in for fun and friendship until the Spring. Just turn up at 2.00pm. All welcome. £15 membership, £3 per session.

Play the Game

Direction of Play

New members may be unaware of the need to work out the Direction of Play. To even out the wear on the playing surface we change the direction of play each week. It will either be Hut to Hut (clubhouse at your back) or Hedge to Hedge (hedge at your back). The direction of play is displayed on the notice board in the clubhouse foyer.
